Songkran at The Knowledge
Mid-April marks the beginning of the Thai New Year, also known as Songkran, in Thailand. We are going to be seeing in the official start of the Thai New Year, by having pre-festivities, including nibbles and refreshments, here at our Lake Rachada School for Songkran, from 8-9 p.m., on Thursday 12th April - where Kru Boss and his team will be hosting some special activity classes, prior to heading out and enjoying the city, possibly the same night. Why not, right? For our students and friends who are new to this wonderful and water filled event (in the streets only, we promise) it will be a chance to see the traditional clothes worn at this time of year and to make some things and have a laugh in class. Without further ado, check below for a few cultural tips about what you can do to enjoy Songkran, the most….
Top 3 tips to enjoy Songkran1. Do make sure that not only do you wear clothes that you’re prepared to get wet in, but put your cash and/ or mobile phone into a water-tight and sealable plastic bag or pouch. It’s not uncommon for someone to try to soak you with water, over the three – sometimes four or even seven day – festival. Wear googles or snorkel masks, if you are especially sensitive around your eyes. 2. The amount of people wanting to leave the city around the time of Songkran will be immense, meaning that Bangkok will be quieter than usual but the roads will be jammed more than jam, in a jam jar, in a jam factory, in Jamaica. (I know, we can’t resist these cheesy puns ;-) 3. The more traditional and native side to the festival can certainly be enjoyed with fewer tourists in the district of Phra Pradaeng, where the communities of Thai-Raman come together around the week after central Bangkok unites. Splashing and water will be the theme, still, along with cultural events such as: Raman dances, a unique flag ceremony, floral parades, boat racing and no doubt much more. Please, check our social media and Customer Service at reception, in-house, at our school for further details or any other questions. Get those swimming trunks and bikinis ready, and enjoy!
