Thai Education Visa Application Process
Step 1: Getting documents ready
In order to apply for an ED visa to be able to study Thai language courses with the Knowledge while the student has not yet entered Thailand, the student needs to have at least 12 months remaining validity and sufficient blank pages in their passport. The student’s tourist visa must have validity for at least 3 weeks from the date the application documents are submitted. The student MUST enroll in the Thai Language course / 400 hours package. This package includes the student’s textbook (Speaking and Listening Book 1, Reading and Writing Book1), level test, and the fee for processing the letter from the Ministry Of Education (5,000 baht). Please note that The Knowledge will process your application once the payment has been received and all necessary documentation has been submitted. The payment can be done via overseas bank transfer. (The student must pay all fees related to the International bank transfer.)
Step 2: Processing a letter from The Ministry of Education
• To get the necessary papers from the Ministry Of Education in order to apply for the first 3-months ED visa takes at least 3 weeks from the time The Knowledge has received documentation from the student. • Once The Knowledge has received documentation from The Ministry of Education, a staff member will inform the student that they can come to pick up all necessary documents to apply for a Non-Immigrant Education Visa at the Thai Embassy or Thai Consulate. The Knowledge can send documents by post for students outside Thailand (postage fees apply). (Students of some nationalities will need to return to their home country if they are not currently living there. See the list at the end of this document.)
Step 3: Apply for an ED visa in overseas Thai Embassies or consulates
• Please check the working hours and relevant holidays of the Embassy at which you plan to apply for the ED visa. This must be the same one that you have informed The Knowledge of in Step 2. It takes at least 2 working days to get a Non-ED 3-month visa. • The student must check whether they will need to get a tourist visa to visit the country where they would like to apply for the ED visa. It is the student’s responsibility to get a tourist visa, if necessary, to visit that country. • It is the student’s responsibility to pay for the visa application (approximately 60 US dollars for Single Entry) directly to the Thai Embassy or consulate.
Step 4: The next step after the student returns to Thailand
• When the student returns to Thailand with a 3-month Non-ED visa, the Immigration Officer will stamp a maximum 90-day stay in their passport. • During this 90-day stay, if the student wishes to leave Thailand they MUST apply for a Re-Entry permit 7 days in advance of their trip. • The student MUST bring their passport to The Knowledge within 7 days after their arrival, as The Knowledge needs to submit the application for the student’s second letter by making copies of their passport and visa which must be signed by the student. This step takes at least 4 weeks to process. The student should keep in touch with The Knowledge regularly getting updates on the process.
Step 5: Testing at the Ministry of Education and Visa Extension/ Address Report at the Immigration Department
• Once the second letter from The MOE has been received, it means that the student is allowed to stay in Thailand with the Non-ED visa for another 9 months. The student still MUST submit a Visa Extension (1,900 baht fee paid direct to the Immigration Office) and Address Report to the Immigration Office at least once every 90 days. • Students must pass tests at the Ministry of Education in order to get a letter approving their next visa extension. They must also bring completed quizzes from The Knowledge as proof that they have been studying. After the student has passed the test and received the approval letter, the student will bring this letter to the Department of Immigration when applying for their visa extension.
